This guide will show you how to add borders to your graphics. Without you messing up your graphics.
Making the image
First make the image. The special thing about adding borders this way is that you will have to make it 2 pixels smaller on both width and height. I chose the following image for my example:

Now that you have added your border your avatar should look like this:
